The day after his birthday and days before the start of the 2011 ASP Tour, Jordy Smith took time out of his hectic schedule to host the Jordy Smith Psycho Surf Day together with his sponsor O’Neill. The event was open to all young surfers and offered the groms the chance to meet and surf with Jordy.
The day kicked off at 9am at North Beach with a herd of frothing groms paddling out with Jordy. Among them was a contingent of surfers from Umthombo, a bunch of street kids who have found surfing as a way to channel their energy. Chaos was the order of the day with drop ins, inside paddling and general mayhem as the lighties all looked to impress the 2010 ASP #2. Shane Sykes was the ‘grom’ who Jordy felt surfed the best during the session and he was rewarded with a new Gee Force Surfboard and an O’Neill Psycho 2 full wetsuit, both autographed by Jordy.
After the surf session, which was witnessed by packed crowds on the pier and beach, O’Neill presented a bursary to Lucky from the Umthombo Street Children organization. This guy was so stoked as the rest of the crew gathered around him. Then it was time for autograph signing and Jordy was mobbed as he sat at the table signing posters, caps, boards and all manner of things the groms could get in front of him.
Besides the awesome turnout, the thing that impressed me the most was the wonderful attitude displayed by Jordy all morning. Full of smiles, helping the youngsters in the water and posing for endless photographs, he presented a fantastic role model to all the people who came out to see him.
The team at Ocean Driven Media wish Jordy everything of the best for his 2011 campaign.
