We love our work !
After working independently for a number of years, Wade Howard and Mike van Heerden have joined forces under the banner of Ocean Driven Media. Prior to this, the individual entities were Wade Howard Photography and Activpix Photography. With similar outlooks on life and each driven by a passion for the ocean and creative photography, it made sense to pool our talents and thereby offer our clients a more well rounded experience. By the very nature of our work, this merger will never detract from the individual creativity and style we each possess.
Ocean Driven Media is based in Durban but is open to work both nationally and internationally. We offer a wide range of photographic genres; high-profile events, weddings of all natures, modeling portfolios, family and pet photography and surf and lifestyle imagery. Doing work of such a varied nature means we are constantly using different photographic skills, testing our creativity and pushing our limits.
I love my job and am loving it more as time goes on- every year I find new inspiration. I specialise in weddings as I enjoy the interaction with our clients and am extremely good at capturing those special moments that happen on the day from me not interfering or directing. I love using the surroundings and get inspired by a new venue or photoshoot location. After 14 years of photographing weddings you would think that you have seen it all but every wedding is different and every couple is different. I have to adapt to each couple and each venue. This doesn’t even take into account the weather! God loves to keep me on my toes and sometimes presents a lovely blue sky while other times it rains the whole day but he has given me the skills anyway so I know I can always cope.
I have recently realized(duh) that standing on the beach taking surfing photos does not make you a beachbum. It is an extremely difficult art and a highly competitive one too. I can stand on the beach or dance around the rocks all day taking photos as I think I have lived in the sea since I was, since I was born sounds about right. This is my favourite form of photography and the thing that gets my inspiration levels maxed out again.
What is next for me, well who knows but as long as I keep getting inspired by God and my wife and family, I will carry on doing what I love.
Life is about moments, and it’s my passion to capture those moments. Whether it’s the look in a bride’s eye as she stares at her groom, or a split second of peak action from an athlete. The light falling on one of God’s creations in nature, or a stage in the construction of a building. These all present moments that are particularly special to someone. Careful observation and attention to detail will ensure that the moment is captured for eternity.

I never really expected to start a career in photography; I sort of meandered into as I seem to do a lot of time in life. Whatever the cause, I’m loving what I am doing and cannot wait to grow more in this field and improve on where I stand. My main interests are in the travel field, but until I can kit out a backpack and head off into the world I’m more than happy trying my hand at any genre of photography that comes my way.
